Behind the laundry cages there was a door I had never noticed, painted over so many times the grain had gone soft. Someone had cut the same mark into the wood at chest height: a tall blade of a triangle, flared at its foot into two angular wings, with a curved hood swinging beneath like a cloak half drawn back. The cuts were clean. Whoever made them had known exactly where the point should fall.

Inside, the room held one iron chair, a lamp on a chain, and a shelf of ledgers bound in green cloth. The oldest page was dated 1911 in copperplate. Every entry was the same: a name, a bed number, a time, then the words sat until relieved. The last line was in biro and dated that morning. Mrs Okafor, bed nine, the ward I had wheeled her from at midnight.

I wrote my own name beneath hers, with the time, and sat in the iron chair because my legs would not carry me out. The lamp swung on its chain until the clock above the door said six and Dev's mop came squeaking down the corridor. When he opened the door he found me signing off, the pen's nib pressed so hard into the paper that it had left a point, and the lamp still swinging towards the empty chair.
