Chain bracelet tattoo with charms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo on the inner forearm near the wrist, showing a chain bracelet wrapping around the arm. Two charms hang from the chain, one with an anchor-like shape and a lower one with rounded detailing. The linework is fine and the shading is black and grey, set against a blue denim background.

The chain was the easy part, and I told Marcus so when he came to the stall with his sleeve already rolled. Forty links of bronze wire, each bent round a nail and closed with three taps of the hammer so it would not gape when the sea pulled at it. He watched me work the way men watch a dice game, certain he could read the odds.

The anchor was harder. I had cast it twice before, and both times the flukes came out blunt, like a child's drawing of a thing it has never seen. Marcus had sailed the grain run from Alexandria for eleven years and he knew what a true fluke looked like. He held the first one up to the lamp and shook his head. 'My wife will think I am drowned if I wear that,' he said. I did not laugh. She had already sent word to the smith in a sealed tablet, and her instructions were very exact.
The third anchor was right. I filed the shank until it sat straight against the chain, then hung a small rounded bead beside it, a thing I had made for practice and never sold. Marcus turned it over and asked what it was for. I said a man who came back from every voyage ought to owe something to the water too.
He paid me in copper and walked down the quay with the sun catching the links. I noticed then that I had left the last link open, which I had never done before. When I asked why, he said it was for the next charm, and that he meant to come back for it.
