Blue-ringed octopus on a leg

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A large octopus with a reddish-brown body and bright teal spots wraps its tentacles around the leg, with several arms curling outward and one reaching towards the right. The linework is fine and the body is shaded to suggest volume, with darker grey outlines on the tentacle suckers. The photo is taken straight on against a tiled floor, and the tattoo fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boy had tipped the bucket onto the slipway before Ada could reach him, and the octopus slid out in a slack heap of arms, the colour of wet brick. Its spots were dull as old pennies. Then his shadow fell across it, and the rings lit one after another, bright as a signal lamp across the harbour mouth.

"Don't touch it, Tom. Don't even breathe on it." Ada had his wrist before he could argue. Her husband Eli had shown her the same trick forty years back, off the Lizard, with a pot full of the small ones. The loveliest things in the rock pools were the ones that would stop your heart, he'd said, and then he'd laughed and eaten his pasty with the same hand he'd used to pull the creel.

So they knelt on the cold stone and waited. The tide sheet slid in across the slip, a finger's depth at first, then up to the boy's boots. The octopus flattened itself, one arm reaching for the water and curling back on itself like a question. Ada counted under her breath. Tom stopped fidgeting somewhere around forty. The arms drew the creature down the slope, a slow fold at a time, and the last blue ring went out like a torch switched off in another room.

By evening the bucket was back on its hook by the net shed. Tom had drawn an octopus on the back of a tide table, with a ring of blue crayon around every sucker he could manage, and he pinned it to the wall above the kettle where Ada would see it first thing.
