Chandelier and figure on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed chandelier sits high on the upper back, with a single thin line running down in a curve to a shaded figure in an upside-down pose near the lower back. A small faceted gem shape sits below the figure. The work is in black and grey, with fine linework on the rope-like line and soft shading on the chandelier and figure.

The chandelier at the Hotel Stellner had not been lowered since the winter the frontier moved, and the night porter told Ilse Brandt so twice before she had even unclipped her harness. Forty-one arms of cut glass hung over the ballroom, furred grey with cigarette smoke and sixty years of tallow. Above them, a single black cord ran through a pulley that had long since seized. Ilse was the only rigger in Brenn who would climb it.

She went up on a Tuesday, when the ballroom was empty and river fog pressed against the tall windows. Each arm came away in her gloved hands, and she wiped them one by one with vinegar and newspaper, the way her father had taught her on the ropes at the Lenz fairground. Near the top, wedged where the iron met the ceiling rose, she found a stone no bigger than a fingernail, cut in facets that threw a green spark when she tilted her head.
The porter went pale when she came down, then very quiet. 'That was his,' he said, meaning the rigger who fell in 1931, and he said nothing more, only looked at the window that faced the bridge. Across the water the border post kept its lamps burning all night, and every hour a guard walked the span with a torch, counting the people who crossed with nothing in their pockets.
Ilse kept the stone closed in her fist until she reached the middle of the bridge at dawn. The guard raised his torch to her face. She opened her hand and let the gem fall into the black river. It did not splash. It simply went out, the way a candle does, and behind her the chandelier gave one soft chime, like something that had waited a long time to be let go.
