Small sailboat with dotted reflection on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small sailboat with a single mast and sail is drawn in fine black linework, centred on the upper back along the spine. Beneath the hull, the reflection is built from dense stippled dots that fade downward, giving a sense of water. The image is black and grey only, and the tattoo sits in the middle of the frame with the back and the top's straps visible around it.

Mags had been painting the same sloop for three weeks, and the owner kept asking where the reflection was. "She's in the water, Mr Harcourt, she's supposed to be on the water," he said, tapping the glass of the workshop door with a fingernail stained yellow from a habit he'd given up in 1989. Mags kept her brush steady. Reflections were the hard part. A hull sat easily on the eye, but water took the sky and the mast and gave back only what it could hold.

She had learned it from her father, who built clinker dinghies in a shed above Polkerris and never once painted a boat in full colour. He stippled. He sat with a dip pen and a jar of ink and made a thousand small dots, close together at the waterline and sparser as they sank, until the eye believed in depth without being told. "Let the paper do the drowning," he used to say. She thought it was nonsense until the week he died, when she found his last drawing on the bench: a single sail, and beneath it a column of dots thinning to nothing, like a boat that had gone down slowly and politely.
The sloop was finished on the Friday. Mr Harcourt came in, looked for a long time, and then nodded at the faint trail of dots under the hull. "That's her," he said. "That's exactly how she sits when the tide's out."
Mags wiped her hands and did not tell him the other thing, that the drawing on her bench showed the boat her father had sailed alone to Falmouth one winter and never once mentioned again. She switched off the lamp, locked the shed, and left the last dots to dry in the dark.
