A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

They still tell it in Ashby, at the reunion dinner, when the wine has gone round twice. Nell Carrow was the smallest girl in the infants and the most stubborn in the juniors, and she wore striped stockings her mother knitted from the wool of a grey ewe. On the last day of Michaelmas term the head put the lost property box on the top shelf of the cloakroom, because it was the one place nobody could reach.

Nell reached. She climbed the coat pegs in her pinafore, and her stockings slipped, and she hung there with one hand on the rail and the other stretched toward the box. The whole school saw her shape against the high window, black against the light. Mr Dunmore came running with the ladder. By the time he got there she had let go, and the box was in her hand, and the cloakroom was empty, and the rail was still swinging.

Folk in Ashby say a girl who reaches for what is out of her place will always be let down by a step short of the ladder. So at each reunion the old pupils set one chair empty by the door, and they fill a box with things nobody has claimed, and at the end of the night someone stands on a chair, reaches for the top shelf and says Nell's name.

Last year the box was empty when they opened it. Only a single striped thread lay in the bottom, and somebody tied it to the hook, and nobody remembers who.
