Cherry blossom branch across a back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A dark branch with forked twigs curves from the lower left to the upper right of the back, with clusters of pink blossoms and buds along its length. The branch is shaded with solid black ink and fine tonal detail, while the blossoms are rendered in soft pink with lighter highlights. The tattoo fills the diagonal of the frame against a dark background, with the skin around it smooth and warmly lit.

It has grown entirely the wrong way, sideways through the railings, as if it is trying to get off the estate.

The blossom came last week, all at once after the wind. So many petals stuck to the stairwell windows that the caretaker swept them into bin bags, and then I saw him stand looking at the bags for a full minute before carrying them down. I took a branch in and put it in a jam jar on the kitchen sill, where it faces the car park, the bus shelter and the chippy that shut in March.

Dad used to say a tree only goes where it has room. Looking at ours, it has found the one gap in the whole block where the light comes in at an angle. Yesterday I counted seventeen buds I hadn't noticed before, tight as fists, all pointing at the flats across the way. Most of those have their blinds down.

I'm not writing to ask you to come up and see it, though you should. Just tell Dean his picture of the Wirral came out nice, and that I've put the old kettle back on so the window steams, and the branch looks like it's been drawn on the glass. Love, Carol.
