Cherry blossom branch on the ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo of a bare branch with pink cherry blossoms runs from the lower side of the torso up towards the ribs. The branches are drawn in dark outline with shading, and the blossoms are filled in pink with small dark centres. Real pink blossoms are held in frame at the left, and the warm skin tone and dark background keep the design as the focus.

Sit closer, the fire is only for the telling. My grandfather crossed the Vadan bridge in the last week of February, when the river was still hard at the edges and the guards on both banks had stopped counting who came over, because nobody came over in February. He carried nothing but a cloth bundle tied at the neck and a loaf of black bread, and the guard on the east side lifted the bundle with two fingers and asked what it was worth.

"A branch," my grandfather said. "Cut from the old tree behind the schoolhouse. My wife wants it for her window."
The guard unwrapped it anyway. There was nothing on it but grey wood and a few knuckled buds the colour of wet slate. He laughed and said the tree would die in a foreign window, and waved him through. My grandfather did not tell him that the branch had been promised to a widow on the far bank who taught weaving, or that he had kept it alive in damp moss under his coat for three days.
He walked the six kilometres to her door without stopping. When she opened it, she did not take the branch at once. She set a jug of water in the window, stood the cutting in it, and told him to sit down, because the soup was ready and the story of the crossing would take as long as the soup did. By morning the buds had split, pale pink and five-petalled, dozens of them opening along the grey wood as if someone had painted them in the night. The guard came round later with his papers and stood in the doorway, and the widow poured him a cup of tea and never asked to see the papers at all.
That is the tale, and the blossom came across with it, which is why nobody in our village will let a branch be broken on that bridge. Go on, drink your tea before it cools.
