Cherry blossom branch across a back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A branch of cherry blossom runs diagonally from the upper shoulder down towards the side of the back, with open five-petalled flowers and closed buds. The petals are soft pink with grey shading, while the stems and leaves are rendered in black and grey with smooth gradients. The composition is asymmetrical, with the heaviest cluster of blossoms in the lower half of the design.

Nell had been told the tree would not survive the sale of the house, so on the last grey morning of October she went out with her grandfather's pruning saw and a damp length of sacking. The orchard behind Coldharbour Farm ran down to the brook, and the old cherry leaned over the wall as if it wanted to see the road. Nobody had pruned it since the war. Its branches had knotted into a tangle, and the buyers from Bristol wanted it felled for the view.

She chose a limb that reached out over the wall, grey where the bark had split, with three buds still tight and pale at its tip. The saw went through slowly. Her hands were cold, and each time she stopped to rest she heard the brook louder than before. She wrapped the cut end in sacking, then the whole branch in a dampened tea towel, and carried it up the lane as if it were a baby that might wake.
At the kitchen table she found her mother's grafting knife in the drawer under the bread bin. Nell had watched it done a hundred times but never done it herself. She split the rootstock of a wild plum she had planted the spring before, slid the cutting in, and bound it with waxed string. Outside, the first frost whitened the top of the wall.
In April the buds opened, five pale petals each, while the brook ran high under the bridge. The buyers were disappointed to find the old tree gone, though the new one in the corner of the garden was barely more than a stick. Nell stood beneath it with her mother's knife in her pocket and waited for the first flower to catch the light.
