Cherry blossom tree and birds on upper back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A cherry blossom tree with thin black branches rises up the upper back, with clusters of pink blossoms along the branches and loose pink petals falling below. Three small black birds sit in flight near the top and left of the tree. The branches are fine black linework, while the blossoms are softly dabbed in pink ink against bare skin with a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Hallow Terrace believed the cherry tree in the yard of Mrs Pargeter's boarding house would bloom, not after the salt wind had stripped its last leaves the winter before. Still, every March the lodgers came down to breakfast and found the branches pink again, with the gulls sitting in them like dropped stones.

Mrs Pargeter kept one ledger for her rooms and another for what her guests owed her, and she did not care for either being wrong. So when a young man called Tobias Crane arrived off the Plymouth coach with one trunk and a cough, she gave him the attic room under the eaves and told him the tree was not to be climbed.

He climbed it on the third night. He said afterwards that he only meant to see the sea from the top, and that the blossom had come down around him like a snow that was warm to the touch. Three black birds rose out of the crown and went west over the harbour wall, and he followed them with his eyes until the lamps on the pier went out.

When the tree bloomed the next spring, the petals lay on the hall carpet in a trail that led to the front door, and Mrs Pargeter swept them up without a word. Some say the birds carried Tobias off to sea. Others say he reached Valparaiso, made his fortune, and sends a letter each April with a pressed blossom folded inside. Mrs Pargeter says only that the tree keeps its own accounts, and that she has never once charged it rent.
