Rose bouquet tattoo on the shoulder blade
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a large rose surrounded by smaller roses, buds, sprigs and leaves, shown on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading across the petals and leaves that gives the rose depth. The bouquet is arranged in a diagonal sweep across the skin, and the photograph is taken close up with a plain pale background.

The snow had shut the pass for eleven days when the stranger came down the stair with a bundle under his arm and asked for a knife. Mistress Hale gave him the bread knife and asked no questions, because the inn at Callow Gap had never been a place for questions in winter. Men came in with frost in their eyebrows and left again in spring, and most of them carried something they did not wish to talk about.

He sat by the fire and unwrapped the bundle on the settle. Inside was a rose root, black as a boot, with three dry stems no longer than a finger. He said his grandmother had taken it from a garden behind a burned chapel in the lowlands, and that it would only bloom where the frost had bitten deepest. The landlord's son laughed. The stranger did not.
Nobody saw him go out. In the morning the bundle was gone and the knife lay clean on the table. On the sill of the back window, where the glass had frosted over in ferns, something had pushed through the rime: a single bud the colour of a bruise, then leaves dark as ink, and then, before the cook had finished the porridge, a rose the size of a fist, with smaller blooms climbing its stem like children following their mother home.
The snow lifted on the twelfth day. The carts went through the pass, and Mistress Hale kept that window shut all winter, though the rose went on growing against the glass. In spring she found the bread knife in the bed beneath it, its blade worn to a thin silver crescent, and she never once asked where the stranger had gone.
