Cherry blossom branch and butterfly on abdomen
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A branch of pink cherry blossom runs diagonally across the skin, with a blue butterfly above it and loose petals falling below. The flowers are shaded in soft pinks and the butterfly has detailed wing markings and highlights, giving a dimensional effect. The close crop shows the lower abdomen with a navel piercing at the right edge.

The frost had caught the first buds again, so Ottilie spent the morning draping fleece over the south wall, pegging each sheet down with the care she'd once given to seed packets. The cherry had been grafted by her grandfather from a whip his brother sent home from Japan in a tin lined with wet moss, and it had never once been a sensible tree. It flowered too early and dropped its petals like a grudge.

Dev, who was seventeen and still believed in schedules, asked why they bothered protecting it. She told him the blossom lasted nine days if the wind was kind, and that a gardener was paid to be stubborn on behalf of things that could not argue for themselves. He nodded as if he had understood, then went back to the fleece with his hands numb and red.
By noon the sun had come out thin and pale, and a blue butterfly, improbably early out of its chrysalis, settled on the bricks above the branch. It opened and closed its wings slowly, showing the dark dots along the edges, as though it were reading the tree's notes. A petal let go and turned over twice before landing on the flagstone, then another, pink as a fingernail, until the path below the wall looked like confetti scattered for a wedding that had already happened.
Ottilie did not sweep them. She crouched, picked up the one nearest her boot and pressed it into the ledger where she logged frost and rainfall, between Tuesday's entry and a line in her grandfather's careful hand that read simply: leave the tree alone. The butterfly lifted, circled the wall once, and drifted over to the neighbour's yard where nothing was in bloom at all.
