Cherry blossom branch on upper arm

Japanese · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a dark branch running diagonally across the upper arm, with pink cherry blossoms in various stages, from closed buds to open five-petalled flowers. The branches and twigs are shaded in black and grey, while the flowers use layered pink and red tones with lighter highlights. The blossoms are spread across the arm, with the largest flowers near the centre and smaller buds towards the edges, against a pale skin background and dark clothing.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The big top came down in March, but the cherry tree in the field behind the winter quarters had other ideas. You hear it before you see it, the lorries ticking as they cool, Mrs Oakes swearing at the generator that won't catch. Nobody planted that tree on purpose. Walter Pell put it in the year his wife left, a whip of a sapling bought from a garden centre outside Retford, and every spring since it has flowered at the wrong moment for anyone who needed it to.

This spring the show is down to three acts: a tired grey mare called Duchess, two jugglers who no longer speak, and you, lacing the high wire to a rigging point you have checked twice because nobody else will. Pell comes across the grass with a dented flask and stops beneath the branches. "Look at that," he says, as though the tree has been keeping something from him. Pink buds crowd the twigs, some shut tight as fists, some split open to five pale-hearted petals, and the dark wood runs through them like a crack in a plate.

You tell him the wire is ready. He says the ticket money won't cover the diesel. You both know it. He snaps a spray from the lowest branch and tucks it behind your ear without asking, the way a man posts a letter he has no intention of rereading.

That night you climb to the wire alone. Below you the field is pale with petals blown off the tree, drifting over the empty seats and settling in the sawdust like snow that forgot to be cold. You walk the length of it once, slowly, arms out, and the wire holds. There is nobody to see it. You just wanted to find out whether it still would.
