Cherry blossom branch on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A slender black branch curves down the forearm, with clusters of pink cherry blossoms along its length and small loose petals drifting beneath. The linework is thin and crisp, while the blossoms are filled with soft, slightly blended pink and red shading. The design sits centrally on a plain skin background, with a dark surface visible at the edges of the frame.

In the village of Harrowgate Bank, the old men said the pit had a cherry tree in it, though none of them had seen it. Sam Teague's grandmother said it grew from a sapling her own grandfather carried down the shaft in his coat the spring the seam was opened. Every March, she said, a branch came down through the roof rock, and the men quick enough to look could see blossom on the coal face before the shift bell.

Nobody believed it until the winter the roof came down at number four. Eleven men were under the fall. Sam, who was nineteen and had no patience for stories, went down with the rescue party carrying a lamp and a bad temper. He crawled past the timber props, and where the dust settled he saw a thin black branch running along the coal, and on it pink flowers, soft as breath, with a few petals lying on the stone below.
He followed the branch. It did not lead him straight to the men. It led him to a gap where the rubble had settled into an air pocket, and there he heard a knock, then another, counted in threes the way his grandmother tapped the table before grace. He shouted. Eight voices answered. He brought them out one at a time along a path the petals seemed to mark, though he told no one that part for years.
At the surface, his grandmother was waiting by the winding wheel with her shawl pulled tight. She did not ask him anything. She picked a petal from his collar, pressed it into her palm, and said the tree would want a new branch now, which meant someone had to go down in spring and plant one. Sam went the next March with a cutting wrapped in wet sacking, and he never once let the lamp go out.
