Pink blossom branch on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A branch of pink five-petalled blossoms with yellow-centred flowers and small closed buds runs up the forearm. The petals are shaded with soft gradients of pink and red, and the branch and stems are rendered in grey with fine detail. The pale skin and clear plastic wrap sit around the arm against a wooden floor and a dark patterned background.

Dear Tom, The branch you asked about is standing in the tap-room window in a stone jug that used to hold cider, and I have had to move it twice because the landlord keeps leaning on the sill to watch the lorries. I took it from the old pink tree behind Pardoe's barn the morning before they levelled the lane. Mr Pardoe stood at the gate with his arms folded and told me the tree was past bearing, which was rich coming from a man who hasn't planted anything since 1974.

I cut three feet of it with his own pruning saw, which I hadn't asked for and he hadn't offered. Five-petalled, the blossom, pink at the edge and paler towards the heart, with little yellow knots in the middle as if someone had dropped sugar on them. The buds were still shut tight, hard as pins, and I kept thinking they would never open in a jug on a windowsill in February. They did. Yesterday two of them went, one after the other, while Dot was wiping down the bar and nobody noticed but me.
Dot says the blossom is a sign of something, but she says that about the weather too, so I have decided it is only a branch. Still, it has made the room a bit less grey. The snow is up to the sills outside and the post van hasn't come since Tuesday, so the guests have taken to playing cards by the fire and arguing about whether the road will open before the pork runs out.
Come at Easter if the lane is clear. Bring your good coat and nothing else. I will show you where the saw is kept, and you can tell Pardoe yourself that the tree is not finished.
