Cherry blossom branch on the side of the body
Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A thin brown branch curves diagonally up the skin, carrying pink cherry blossom flowers at varying stages, some open and some in bud. Shading gives the petals soft gradients and the leaves a fresh green tone, with fine linework defining the stems. The branch is set against warm, smooth skin with a dark vignette around the edges of the photo.

Snow still lay in the gullies of Kessel Saddle when Nell Varga tied the last pack mule to the post outside the hut. She had wrapped the cutting in wet sacking and carried it inside her coat for two days, because the wind up there had teeth and the sap could freeze in a branch no thicker than a pencil. Old Ferenc had told her the tree grew on the lee side of the cairn, where nothing else would root, and that its blossom opened before the snow had finished leaving.

The tree was there, bent almost flat by the wind, its pink flowers bright against the grey rock. Some were fully open and some were still tight as knuckles, and a few had already dropped onto the scree like scraps of paper. She cut a single shoot with her knife, the length of her forearm, and laid it on the sacking. Far below, in the valley, the orchard her brother had let go to ruin was waiting for someone to graft onto the old stock.
Halfway down, a boy from the hut came running after her with a jam jar of water, saying his mother had sent it so the flowers would last. Nell took it without thanking him properly and set the branch in the jar on the mule's pannier. By the time they reached the first village the petals had gone soft and rosy at the edges, and two buds had split open against the glass.
At the orchard gate she did not knock. She propped the jar on the wall where her brother would see it from the kitchen window, then set to work with the grafting knife, cutting a clean T into the bark of the oldest pear. The wind came down off the pass and shook a few petals loose, and she let them land wherever they liked.
