Pink magnolia branch on the side
Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A branch of pink magnolia flowers runs diagonally across the skin, with three open blooms, two closed buds and green stems. The petals have dark outlines and soft pink and white shading that gives them volume. The branch is set against plain skin with no other elements in the frame.

Sit yourself down, you're letting the cold in, and mind the hinge on that door, it sticks. Right. You want to know why Mr Okafor never sold the last branch off his cart? Because he'd promised it to a woman who never came back for it.

It came up from Kent in the February the canal froze at the edges, wrapped in damp newspaper and a sack. Three flowers open, pink as the inside of a shell, and two buds still shut tight as fists. Nobody in the market wanted magnolia that early, the frost would have them by Friday. But the woman who ordered it, a Mrs Dunmore from the flats above the laundry on Shelton Street, had written her order on the back of a gas bill in pencil. One branch. Open ones facing the window. Keep the closed ones for later.
He carried it up the four flights every evening for a fortnight, a jug of water in one hand and a fresh cut stem in the other. Every evening the open flowers held. On the fifteenth night the door stayed shut, and a neighbour on the landing told him the ambulance had come at dusk. So the branch sat there in its jug on the stair carpet, and the two buds, which had stayed closed all that time, opened in the warm stairwell like a letter being read slowly.
So he brought it home, and it's stood on my windowsill ever since. I've never once managed to tip the water out.
