Colour tattoo of a pink cherry blossom branch with a black script quote above it, placed across the upper back near the shoulder blade.

Cherry blossom quote on upper back

Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a black script quote reading "The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all" arranged across the upper back. Below it, a branch of pink cherry blossom flowers with darker pink centres trails diagonally across the skin. The blossoms use soft shading in pinks and reds, while the lettering is crisp black ink.

Dear Mitsuko,

The frost took the whole east row again last night, and I am writing with my fingers still stiff from the grafting knife. Your father's old tree by the well is the only one that held its buds. Do not tell him I said so. He will want the credit, though it was the wall that saved it, not his pruning.

You remember the branch from the north slope that the magistrate's man called dead wood. I took it anyway, cut it back to the first green, and bound it to the rootstock with wet straw. For three seasons it sulked and gave us nothing but grey bark, and the whole village laughed at my stubborn stump. This spring it came out in pink, five petals to each flower, the centres darker, as if someone had pressed a thumb into wet paint.

The old women say the rarest blossoms open only after the worst winter. I used to think that was just a saying to comfort children. Now I think it is the plain truth about cold wood, and I am not sure what to do with that truth except keep cutting.

Bring the blue cloth when you come, the one you wove the winter the goats died. We will wrap the cuttings in it for the market in the capital. The branch is yours if you want it. Cut it yourself at the first green, and bind it wet.
