Matron says it is a foolish thing to fuss over, but I stood at the window at six this morning with the tea going cold and counted the branches until I lost count. Pink on grey, and the cold still in the glass.

You asked me last Sunday whether the new girl, Pearl, would stay on through the winter. I said I did not know. She came from the mill town with one suitcase and a cough she would not let anyone look at, and she cried in the linen cupboard her first week because a patient called her Peggy. Yesterday she brought the ledger up to me without being asked, every bed correct, every drip timed. I have not said so to her. Some things are better left as they are.

When the sisters on nights go home I walk the long way past the cherry by the gate, the one somebody planted before the old wall came down. The petals are soft at the edges and darker in the middle, as if they have been bruised and decided to be beautiful anyway. I thought of the words painted on the board in the day room, the ones the Ladies' League put up in the spring. I used to think they were sentimental. Now I think they were only true and nobody likes true things before breakfast.
