Script quote across upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote runs diagonally across the upper back near the shoulder, reading "Life is a beautiful struggle" above "Never let it define you". The letters have smooth, even linework with some soft shading, and the dark ink stands out clearly against lightly tanned skin. The close-up photo shows a blurred room at the top right corner.

Dear Marguerite, the kettle in number six has finally given up, so I am writing this on the back of a tide table while Mr Pascoe argues with the gulls about his breakfast. You will be pleased to hear the new calligrapher from Penzance turned up on Tuesday with a case of brushes and a face like a wet Sunday. He lettered the sign for the front door without being asked twice, and he charges by the word, which I thought mean until I saw what he did with the cursive. Every loop leans the way the wind leans off the headland, as though the words had been written by someone walking into weather.

The other thing I wanted to tell you is about Thea, the girl who waitresses in the dining room. She asked me on Thursday whether a sentence could be inked into a person, and I said I supposed it could, if the person was foolish enough and the sentence short enough. She showed me a scrap of paper she had been carrying in her apron pocket, folded to the size of a stamp, with two lines in pencil. Life is a beautiful struggle. Never let it define you. She had copied them off the poster Mr Pascoe keeps by the fuse box, which he claims is from a cousin in Bristol and which has been curling at the corners since Easter.

I have not decided what to make of it. Some mornings I think the words are a kindness and some mornings they read like an instruction from a man who has never once had to carry the bread trays up four flights. Still, when the late train came in last night and she laughed at something the stationmaster said, I thought the lettering on that paper looked very steady, very sure of itself, and I did not feel like arguing with it. Come in June, the room at the top of the stairs has a view of the sea, and I will show you the pencil copy myself.
