The left panel shows a curving grey-shaded trunk with small, sparse blue and pink blossoms in a light, airy arrangement. Dear Ilse, The frost took the orchard terrace again last night, and the Margrave's steward has asked me to cut the old tree at the east gate, the one that bends over the well like a man bowing to his own reflection. I told him it would flower in April if he left it be. He laughed and said he had heard that every spring since his father's time.

I went up with the saw anyway and found the trunk split at the fork, the sap gone grey and sour. But the bark beneath the split was still green, and when I scraped a thumbnail along the upper limb there was a pale wet line of life. So I bound it with flax and wax, and I left the lower branches where they curled out over the stones, pink at the tips where the buds had swollen before the cold came.
Here is what I did not expect. Two days later the steward came back with a girl from the kitchens, Marit, who carries the bread up the hill every morning. She stood under the tree and asked if she could have one branch for her mother's grave, which lies by the chapel wall. I said yes, provided she took it from the dead side so the living wood could heal. She chose a slender twig with three buds and carried it down cupped in both hands like a lamp.
The tree is in leaf now, too thin on one side, but the blossom came out ragged and bright, the sort that drops on the cobbles before you can make a wish. Come home before the petals go. I want you to see the bend in it from the road, where the trunk turns back on itself, because I think it is the only part still choosing to grow. Yours in haste, Teodor.
