Cheshire Cat and smoke on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A grinning grey Cheshire Cat with green eyes and a wide toothy smile fills the top of the upper arm, with black swirling smoke curling over the shoulder. Below it, a red cherry on a stem and a metallic goblet sit within teal and orange wisps of smoke. The shading is smooth and the colour is bold, shown in two side-by-side photographs from the front and the side.

The lift in Harrow Point had been broken since Easter, so I took the stairs with the shopping clutched against my chest, counting landings the way my nan used to count rosary beads. On the ninth floor the smell of burnt sugar was thicker than usual, and beside the door of 9C someone had drawn a grin in marker pen. Just a grin, no face around it, only a row of teeth, and there were far too many of them.

Mrs Okonedo in 9C said the cat was the new lad's doing, the one with the motorbike who had moved in after the fire on the seventh. She said he kept a red cherry on a saucer and a silver goblet on his sill, and that the goblet smoked green and orange when you struck a match near it. I told her that sounded like a fire risk. She said that was what the council had said too, and then they had come round, looked, and found nothing but a wall with a grin on it and a sweet, scorched smell.
I went up that night with a torch because the landing bulb had gone again. The wall was clean. The goblet was standing on the sill of the window at the turn of the stairs, its rim blackened, and the cherry sat beside it, glossy as a boiled sweet. When I reached for it the smoke rose up and wound round my wrist, cool as river water, and somewhere below a door banged and a man's voice said, quite clearly, that we were all mad here. When I looked back at the wall the grin had climbed a floor, and it was waiting, teeth first, for the lift that never came.
