Chess knight piece design
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a stylised chess knight piece, drawn as a horse's head with a flowing mane above a stepped, round base. The linework is thick and dark, with shaded areas on the neck and mane that give the piece a sculpted look. It is rendered in black ink on a plain cream background, with no colour and no body part visible.

Sit closer, the wind has teeth tonight and this hall has no door left to keep it out. You want the knight? Everyone wants the knight. The rest of the set stood on the high table of Carrow Keep the winter the siege ended, but the knight was never on that table for long. Old Tobias Wren carved them from pearwood in the gatehouse, and he gave the horse's head a mane thrown back like a rider's shout, because he had once owned a grey mare and loved her more than was sensible.

The Countess paid him in salt and a promise. When the castle fell to the Ashby men, the chessmen were the only things nobody thought worth burning, so they were stacked in a box under the chapel steps. Each winter after, somebody swore they heard a knock on that box from inside.
Ach, you laugh. Listen. A knight does not move like a bishop or a rook. It leaps, two squares forward and one across, over any wall or man in its path. The shepherd's boy who found the box said the knight had been moved in the night, always one square to the left, the way a horse shies from a gate it does not like.
Tobias climbed the tower stair one morning to see for himself, and he was never seen again. The knight was found at the foot of the well, its base scraped clean and its mane full of silt, facing the road south as if it meant to ride for the Ashby gate.
