The hall above the Corporation baths smelled of carbolic and Brylcreem, and the floor was sprung so that every turn felt like being lifted by water. Across the room, Dennis Marr was already crossing to ask for the next dance, pretending he had not been watching her since the interval.

She wore the green silk her mother had let out at the seams, and when she spun, the panel at the hem lifted and trailed behind her like a fin cutting slow water. Her partner for the quickstep, a clerk from the gasworks named Sol, laughed and said she moved like the goldfish in the tank by the cloakroom, the ones that circled for no reason anyone had ever explained to him.

She had kept one of those fish in a jam jar when she was nine, and it had died on the windowsill the week her father went to Leeds and did not come back for the summer. Nell did not say this. She let the band take the chorus and let her shoulders go loose the way she had learned from watching the fish, which never seemed to hurry and never seemed to stop.

When the last waltz came, Dennis was still at the edge of the floor with his hat in both hands. She crossed to him without looking at Sol. "You'll have to lead," she said. "I've forgotten the steps." He grinned like a boy and took her hand, and the green silk swung out behind them both, slow and wide, as if it had somewhere to be.
