Chrysanthemum and cherry blossom flash sheet
Japanese · Black and grey · Flash
A black line flash sheet on translucent paper showing two large chrysanthemum heads with leaves and stems, two sprigs of cherry blossom with buds, and several separate five-petal blossoms and single petals scattered to the right. The linework is clean and uniform with outlined petals and layered detail within the chrysanthemum heads. The design is unshaded and uncoloured, with the elements arranged loosely across the sheet.

Dear Ruth, the pass shut on Tuesday, so I am writing this at the long table by the stove while Mrs Gill argues with the landlord about the coal. The snow has buried the lower windows. You would laugh at me, reading by a candle stub with a pot of tea gone cold beside the ledger, but the lamp oil ran out and I have not the heart to walk down to the cellar for more.

Mr Haskett came up this morning with a box under his arm. Inside were the chrysanthemums you pressed for Mother the summer before she went, the ones with the bronze heads like shaving brushes. He said he found them under the boards of the old potting shed when they took it down. I did not know what to say, so I said nothing and carried the box up to the room over the bar, where the window faces the orchard wall. The blossom trees are only grey sticks now, but Father planted them the year you were born, and I thought of the cherry petals drifting across the yard in April, how we chased them with our bare hands.
I am sending some petals in this envelope, pressed flat between the pages at the back of the ledger. Four of them survived. Do not scold me for prising them out of the book. Put them in your window and tell me whether the light still comes through them the way it did.
The thaw is forecast by Thursday. Mrs Gill says the road will be clear enough for the carrier, and then you may write back and tell me everything about the yard. Your loving sister, Edie.
