Cherry blossom branch with swirling leaves
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a long, curving branch of cherry blossom flowers, each with five petals, stamens and small dots, alongside closed buds and sweeping leaves with hatched shading. The linework is fine and dark on a pale, sepia-toned background, with the leaves at the top and bottom framing the flowers. The image is monochrome, with no colour and no body part visible.

The blossom came early that spring, a full week before the gulls had settled on the gallery rail, and by the time you climbed the spiral with the paraffin can it had already started to drift across the lantern glass like wet paper. You had not planted the tree. Ivy Ferrier had, the year she came out from Penzance as a bride, pushing a sapling into the thin soil behind the oil store with her bare hands and a dessert spoon. She told the three keepers who laughed at her that it would bloom before any of them retired.

Ivy had been dead eleven winters now. You kept the tree the way she would have wanted, pruning the dead wood with the saw from the boathouse and tying back the branches that reached for the cliff edge. Every April the petals came off in handfuls and landed on the lens housing, the brass rail and the pages of the logbook, and you swept them into a biscuit tin because you could not bring yourself to throw them over the wall.
On the last night of April the fog came in thick and the foghorn sounded every ninety seconds. You wound the clockwork, checked the wick and found a single pink flower caught in the cracked seal of the window. It had been carried forty feet up a sheer wall by a wind that did not seem to know where it was going. You pressed it between two pages of the logbook, wrote the date beside it, and carried on watching the dark for ships.
