Two peonies with leaves line drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows two peony blooms, one larger on the left and one smaller on the right, with layered petals, open centres and surrounding leaves and stems. The linework is black and fairly consistent, with hatched and stippled shading that gives the petals depth. The flowers sit on a plain off-white background, and the composition fills the frame edge to edge.

By the third week of frost the cellar stores in Aurenmoor were nearly empty, and the Queen's gardener sent you out before dawn with a basket and his father's pair of shears. The peonies in the old walled garden had not been cut for anyone but the court in forty years, and the court had forgotten them. You had not. You knew which roots had been hacked back too hard and which had been left to sulk beneath the hawthorn.

Two heads were still standing by the south wall. The larger bloom was heavy as a loaf, its petals folded over one another like the frills on a dressmaker's hem, its heart a dark crumble of stamens. The smaller one had barely opened, cupped tight and pale at the edges. Steward Orla Venn arrived with two lanterns and a clerk's temper, demanding both for the Midwinter table so the realm would see the garden still obeyed the crown.
You cut only the small one. When he protested, you told him a peony taken twice in a season will never flower again, which was true, and he had no means of checking it. He carried the bud away wrapped in a damp cloth. By supper it had dropped its petals across his sill, and he never mentioned it again.
The large bloom stayed where you left it. That night a hard wind loosened its outer petals, one by one, and they settled on the snow in a wide, pale ring. In spring the Queen walked the garden alone, knelt at the south wall, and found a second flower printed into the thaw where nothing had grown. She asked who had planted it. You told her the peony had simply decided to stay.
