Dear Tom,

I've been clearing the art cupboard ahead of Saturday and found the twelve tiles from the Year Nine zodiac project, still wrapped in the Gazette from 1998. Each of you painted one creature in flat, bold colour, and I fired them in the old kiln behind the bike shed. Nobody wanted the purple one with the two fish tails. You took it home instead, muttering that it was the only one that looked like it was swimming, and I never asked for it back.

I laid them out on the hall floor this afternoon, the way I used to before the bell, so they made a ring with nothing in the middle. The grey goat had lost a horn chip. Dev's teal crab was missing a claw somewhere between the classroom and the car park. Sophie's red scorpion was still the brightest thing in the building, and the orange bull had a thumbprint in the glaze that Mr Haddow swore was evidence. I kept counting and kept getting eleven.

So bring the purple one on Saturday, if it's still in your loft. Stand it in the gap between the green and the navy, next to the piano, and we'll see whether the ring closes after all these years.

Yours, as ever, Mrs Pryce
