Circular Gallifreyan-style emblem on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph taken from behind shows a bold black circle on the upper back, with its inner area left as bare skin and filled with fine black outlines of circles, arcs and dots. The solid black segments around the rim contrast with the delicate linework inside, which is centred in the frame against a patterned wall. The tattoo is black ink only, with clean, even lines and a simple, symmetrical composition.

The third night the circles appeared on the gallery rail, I stopped pretending the gulls had done it. Someone had chalked them in a ring, each one split by a fine arc and sprinkled with dots like a sum I was meant to work out. Harold, who kept the light before me and went quiet the winter he retired, would have laughed. I did not.

I copied them onto the back of the tide tables and carried them down to the cottage. Working with a pencil and my reading glasses, I found the rule: each arc was a position, each dot a count, and the open quarter of every circle faced the sea. Read clockwise, it spelled a name I knew from the lifeboat roll, a time, and the word STAY in a hand that was not mine.
At half past two the beam swept the water and I saw the boat. A small grey hull with no lights was drifting shoreward on the ebb, a single figure hunched at the tiller. I took the storm lantern down the steps to the slip, calling the name the circles had given me, and my voice came back off the cliffs sounding far too young.
The figure lifted one hand, pale against the dark, and traced a circle in the air, closing the loop the way the rail had been drawn. The keel grated on the shingle. Afterwards I knelt and drew the same shape in the wet stone with my boot, leaving the gap facing the sea, exactly where the light would find it.
