Ornamental mandala tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a symmetrical, diamond-shaped ornamental design built from layered petals, a central flower and small dots. Fine black linework and stippled shading give it a delicate, detailed finish. It sits centrally on the upper back against a soft, pale background, with a thin necklace chain visible at the neck.

Pell had been at the galley table since four, pressing a fork tine into dough rounds the way her mother had taught her in a kitchen above a Hull chip shop. The coaster rolled slowly in the grey swell off Flamborough, and every plate she set down slid an inch before settling. Nobody aboard the Marjorie Hale had asked for anything decorative. The bread was for the crew, and the crew wanted it hot.

She cut the first round with the rim of a tin lid. Then she began to lay the pattern out in her head: a diamond of petals, one inside the other like the rings of a cut stem, with a flower at the heart and a scatter of caraway dots to fill the gaps. Her mother had called it the crown, though it looked nothing like one. She had drawn it on the back of a gas bill every Sunday until the biro wore through the paper.
Halfway through the third loaf the engineer, Sol, came in smelling of diesel and asked what the fuss was. Pell said it was nothing, just a way of keeping her hands busy while the sea made up its mind. He leaned over the board and went quiet. Then he picked up a pinch of seed and, without a word, pressed a dot into the last empty petal.
They ate it at six with the lamp swinging overhead. Nobody mentioned the pattern. But when the bread was gone Pell found the plate scraped clean in the middle, and the seeds left in a neat, unbroken flower.
