Fine line black script tattoo arranged in a ring on the upper back of a person wearing a dark top.

Circular script ring on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small, delicate ring of looping black script sits centrally on the upper back, with the lettering running around the circle. The linework is thin and even, with the ink appearing crisp and dark against the skin. The composition is centred, with the surrounding skin and a dark top framing the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bench lamp in Hockley was the only light left on the row after eleven, and I'd just finished the last ring of a wedding pair when a man rapped on the glass. He wore a wet raincoat and held out a gold band no wider than a bootlace. "Engrave it all the way round," he said. "No gap. No start, no finish."

I told him that was a poor idea for a band, because someone always has to be the first letter. He only shrugged and said his sister had asked for it that way. I took his money, clamped the ring in the jig, and cut the characters one at a time with the graver, each stroke hair-thin, each letter leaning into the next like joined-up writing. It wasn't any alphabet I knew, but the shapes repeated in a way that felt deliberate, a loop that kept finding its own tail.

Near two in the morning I reached the join and couldn't find it. I turned the ring under the loupe and every letter was both the first and the last. The lettering didn't sit on the circle so much as grow around it, like ivy up a railing. I stayed there longer than I'd like to admit, rain ticking on the skylight, trying to read it and getting only the sense of being read back.

When he came for it at dawn he didn't look at the engraving. He held the ring to the grey window, turned it once with his thumb, and nodded as if someone had just told him the time. "Well, that's it, then," he said. I realised I'd never once asked his name. The ring stayed on the bench, cool and unbroken, with no edge where anything could begin.
