Tree and globe on upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person's upper back shows a black and grey tattoo of a globe with a small tree growing from its top. Fine, branching lines and fine stippled shading form the landmass shapes inside the circle, while the outline fades in places. The subject is centred on the back against a plain, softly lit background.

At the reunion in the sports hall of Coldharbour Grammar, Marian found Tobias Greer beside the crisps and a jug of orange squash, holding a school atlas he had plainly carried for thirty years. "You still owe me the Antarctic," he said. She had drawn it at fifteen in blue biro, the coastline going to ferns because she could never make the ice sit still.

He opened it to the world map. Someone had pencilled a small tree above the north pole, and beneath it she recognised her own hand. The continents had been traced over with branching lines, every river a root, every mountain range a stem, the oceans left blank like unlit windows. "Mr Hale called it vandalism," Tobias said. "I said it was the only honest map in the building."

She laughed, then stopped, because the hall had gone quiet for the raffle and she could hear the clock above the fire door. The drum rattled. Tobias turned to the last page, where she had written a question in tiny capitals: WHAT HOLDS THE LAND UP. Under it, in his neater hand, someone had answered: the roots, obviously. Marian closed the atlas before anyone could see her face. Outside, the car park lamps came on one by one, and somewhere under the tarmac she imagined the old hedges still pushing their way toward the sea.
