Small leaf wreath on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small open wreath made of thin leaves and stems curves around a bare patch of skin at the base of the neck. The linework is delicate and even, with single-needle lines and little shading, and the ink is solid black. The wreath is centred in the frame against a soft background of skin and hair.

The wire was the part Mrs Harrow never understood. She thought a wreath was just leaves tied into a ring, and she came into the shop every Thursday asking for the ivy to be done thinner, as if I could shrink the leaves by asking nicely. I told her a wreath is mostly the gap in the middle. Anyone can fill a circle. It takes a steady hand to leave it open.

My father taught me that with privet cut from the lane hedge. He would bend a single stem round his thumb, let it spring back, then bend it again until it held the shape he wanted without any binding at all. He said the open end was where the thing breathed, and that a wreath closed up was only a hoop, something to hang on a gate and forget. He made them for the chapel graves on the hill, for the harbour weddings, and once, when the lifeboat went out and didn't come back for two nights, he made one in an hour and hung it on the boathouse door with its ends turned towards the sea.

The summer I turned sixteen I made my first one alone. It came out lopsided, one side thick with leaves and the other bare as a bone. Dad picked it up, studied it for a long while, and said nothing about the bare side. He just turned it so the gap faced him and said, there, that's where you let the light in. I didn't understand him until the funeral, when the wind came off the water and every leaf on that wreath lifted at once, as if it had somewhere to be.
