Circular tribal design with hibiscus and palm tree
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A circular design built from bold tribal and Polynesian-style patterns, with a hibiscus flower, a palm tree in a round panel and island silhouettes. A sun-like burst of rays sits near the top, and the edge of the circle is shaded with stripes and fine hatching. The image is entirely black and white, with clean high-contrast linework and no body placement shown.

Dear Tom, the tide came over the seawall again on Tuesday and took the last of the bench Dad painted. I've dragged the chairs up to the tin-roofed shed behind the copra store, where the hibiscus hedge still throws its shadow across the mats. The boat from Apia is late, as ever, and Mr Faleolo says the radio is broken again, so we wait the way we always do.

The old men have started drawing on the wet sand with sticks, rebuilding the sun the way the tattoo woman showed them when she came through years back. Twelve rays spread from a black centre, each one dark and deliberate. Every morning the sea takes it and every afternoon they draw it again. I asked why they bother. Faleolo said the rays are the sun's arms and a sun with arms cannot drown. I thought that was foolish until I watched the water fill the lines and the lines come back by noon, sharper than before.
The launch came this afternoon, not the supply boat but a small white thing with a man in a pressed shirt who wanted to measure the island for a hotel. He had a chain, a notebook and a plan rolled under his arm with the coastline already drawn on it, cleaner than anything we have ever owned. He asked what the island was called. Faleolo didn't answer. He crouched down, took a stick from the pile and began the sun in the sand, one ray after another, while the man waited with his pen lifted.
The man watched the water come up the beach and reach the centre of the drawing. He didn't say anything. When the last ray went under, he rolled up his plan and walked back to the launch without his chain. I'll post this when the boat comes back, if it comes back. Love to Mum. Tell her the hibiscus is out.
