The bellows had split again by the time Tomasz Wenn came down the hill with the ash bucket on his shoulder, and Mrs Dunning was already at the forge door saying the kiln wouldn't draw. He set the bucket down, pulled off his cap and looked up. The sky over the chapel had gone the colour of wet slate. Rain would reach the market by noon, and the stallholders would sell fewer lamps and more umbrellas, which pleased only the umbrella man.

His grandfather had kept an old rule in the smithy: a flame wants air to turn, and air wants something to lift it, or it just goes flat and sulky. The fire needed the wind to curl through it, and the wind needed a shape to follow. So each spring the family cut the same pattern into the leather of the bellows and the iron of the grate, a rising tongue of flame beside a round of coiling swirls, so that whatever came through would know the way.

That morning Tomasz cut no new pattern. He pulled the grate free, laid the broken leather flat on the anvil and traced the old spirals with his thumb until he found the groove where the air had always wanted to run. Then he opened the flue wide and stood back. The fire rose with a sound like a bell struck underwater, and the smoke bent into rings that drifted out over the stalls in long, patient coils.

The rain came at one o'clock and fell on everything in the square except a circle of dry flagstones outside the forge door, where the chalk spirals Ada had drawn that morning were still clean. Mrs Dunning stepped carefully around them with her shopping. Nobody remarked on it, but she bought a second lamp before she left.
