Yin yang with roses design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A circular yin yang symbol in black and white, with a white rose and leaves on the black side and a black rose and leaves on the white side. Fine ornamental swirls and vine lines run through both halves. The design is flat and graphic, with solid black fills, white areas and crisp outlines on a plain white background.

Sit closer, the fire's only good for the front of you. Now. You'll have heard of the Tallis brothers' wall, the one that runs down from the church to the cider sheds, though nobody has built a wall in this valley since the old king's time. On the north face the roses climbed white. On the south face they grew black as a rook's wing, and the bees would not work one side without visiting the other.

Edwin had the north orchard and Hal had the south. They had not spoken since their mother was buried, which was over a dispute about a grafting knife. Every September the apples came in, and every September they stood either side of the wall with their baskets, pretending the other was a stranger who had wandered onto the lane.

That year the frost came early and took the pears. Hal found his brother sitting on the sill of the broken gap in the stonework, cutting a rose stem with the very same knife, and neither of them said anything for a long while. Then Edwin passed across a cutting, pale and thorned, and Hal passed one back, dark as ink. They bound the two together with raffia, bark to bark, and pressed the join into the wet clay.

By Michaelmas the graft had taken. Hal swore the flowers opened one white and one black on the same stem, and I have never been able to tell you whether he was lying. But every autumn since, the brothers have walked the wall at dusk, and where the two roses meet, the shadow falls in a perfect circle with nothing inside it at all.
