Circular wave design on a calf

Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo

A large circular tattoo on the lower leg shows a blue wave motif across the upper half, a red curved form on the lower left, and a black segmented shape on the lower right. The solid fills have clean edges with thin negative-space lines separating the segments, and the crisp shapes are set against the smooth skin of the calf. The design fills most of the frame, with a plastic sheet and a tiled floor visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferrywoman at Halse Ford had one rule, and she said it to every traveller before the rope creaked taut: the river takes what you carry in your hands, so put down what you cannot spare. Most people laughed. The boy with the goose did not laugh. He had a goose under one arm and a bundle of his mother's letters under the other, and the water was high with snowmelt.

She asked him what the goose was for. He said it was to pay the toll on the far bank, where the officers counted feathers and let through only those who owed something. She said the river did not count feathers. He said then the river could have the goose, and he set it down on the wet boards, and it shook itself and walked back up the bank toward the village, unhurried, as if it had never intended to go anywhere.

They pushed off. Halfway over, the current folded the boat sideways and a wave came up white and sudden, a blue shoulder of water that lifted them and turned them. The ferrywoman kept the rope in her fists. The boy kept the letters against his chest, and the black fan of reeds on the eastern shore spun in the spray like a wheel with its spokes shorn off, while the red glow of the customs lamp swung across the water and back.

The boat grounded on the far stones. The ferrywoman did not ask what was in the bundle. The boy opened it on the bank to make sure the ink had not run, and every page was blank, and he laughed until he wept, because his mother had never learned to write and he had carried her silence across two countries for nothing. He tipped the pages into the river. Then he turned and walked up the bank toward the customs post with empty hands, and the officer waved him through without looking up.
