Celtic knotwork and tree tattoo on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black ink tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, with a central tree-like motif framed by interlaced Celtic knotwork and spiral scrollwork. The central figure is left as lighter skin, which stands out against the solid black fill. The piece is shown from a close angle, filling most of the frame, and is entirely black and grey.

The knot garden at Harrowgate had been clipped the same way since 1790, and Mrs Ferris would have you know it, standing at the gate with her secateurs held like a conductor's baton. It is your first March here. The box hedges run in ribbons around the old rowan at the centre, and the rowan is the only thing in the place that is not bound. Its trunk has gone pale and smooth where the bark came away, and the light sits on it the way a moon sits in a black pond.

Mrs Ferris tells you the pattern is one unbroken line, and that a knot with a loose end lets the ill wind in. So you learn to follow the strands with your eyes before your hands move, over and under, never cutting across. It takes three weeks to find where the line begins. On the fourth Thursday you find a loop no wider than a wedding ring, where the strand doubles back on itself, and you understand that the path was never meant to close.
You take the shears to it that evening, when the house is dark and the gravel is cold under your boots. The cut bleeds green sap onto your fingers. Beneath the box, the rowan's trunk shows its pale heart, and you press your palm to it and find it warm.
By midsummer the loop had knitted shut again, neat as a darn. Mrs Ferris never asked what you had done, and you never learned whether the box had mended itself or the tree had simply decided where the line should run.
