Clasped hands and red rose on an upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A shaded hand and a skeletal hand clasp together at the centre of the design, in front of a large red rose with dark grey leaves. Bold black outlines define the forms, with grey shading on the hand and fine stippled dots forming a halo behind the motif. The palette is mostly grey and black, with the red rose as the main area of colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dinghy comes back on the tide with its oars lashed and no one in it, and nobody on Carrow needs telling what that means. You are twelve. Your mother stands at the top of the slipway with her hands wrapped in her apron, and when the men haul the boat up the shingle she does not look at it. She looks at you.

The rose comes later. Your aunt cuts one from the wall behind the chapel, the big dark-red kind that sheds its petals if you breathe on it, and presses the stem into your palm. Walk it down to the water, she says. Let the sea have something that smells of us. You walk it down. The grey light lies on the water like ash on a grate, and the spray lifts off the rocks in fine dots that hang about your head like a halo you did not ask for. You drop the rose at the edge of the tide and watch it turn once and go under.

Thirty years pass the way the tide does, in and out without asking. The chapel roof goes, then the slipway, then most of the men who hauled that dinghy. Last February the ferry engine quits in the middle of the channel with an old man at the tiller who will not stop talking about the weather. He reaches across the thwart for the boathook, and his hand is all knuckle and cord, the skin drawn so tight over the bones that the light finds its way through at the edges. You take it without thinking. Your own hand is warm and mottled and shaded where the sun has caught it for years.

He holds on harder than you expect. Between you the boat drifts, and the spray comes up in its grey dots, and neither of you speaks until the keel finds the slip. Somewhere under the harbour wall that rose has long since gone to silt, and you find you do not mind. Your hand is still closed around his when the stone takes the weight of the hull.
