Clock and man in suit on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large clock face with Roman numerals fills the background, with ink splatter breaking across its edge. In front of it, a man in a suit and fedora stands on a staircase, with the stairs fading into shadow below him. The piece uses smooth grey shading and strong black contrast, and it wraps the shoulder and upper arm of a shirtless man.

The clock on the Halden Street Exchange had stopped at ten past four for the third time that month, and Inspector Wren Calloway was the only one who bothered to climb the forty-one steps to find out why. At the top, the clock room was a cramped box of brass and dust. The glass of the dial had been cracked, and someone had flung a bottle of blue-black ink across the face, so the numerals bled into the shadows like spilt night. Behind the pendulum, wedged between two gears, he found a ledger bound in oilcloth. Every entry was a payment to a clerk named Ansel Pryce, and every date matched a night when a dock manifest had gone missing. The clock had stopped at ten past four each time, which was exactly when the night watch changed.

Calloway set the minute hand to the true hour with a handkerchief wrapped around his fingers, and the movement shuddered back into life. The chimes rang out across the rooftops. Below, the iron door at the foot of the stairs groaned open, and a pair of polished shoes began to climb, unhurried, one step at a time. Calloway closed the ledger, tucked it inside his coat, and waited for the footsteps to reach him, listening to the clock count out the seconds he had left.
