Clock, key and compass tattoos in mixed styles
Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
This collage shows three tattoos on different parts of the body. The top left piece is a shaded clock face with Roman numerals and exposed gears, set against loose blue ink washes. The lower left piece is an outlined key with purple, red and blue splashes, and the right piece is a compass with a feather above it, surrounded by watercolour-style colour splashes.

The lamp on Scarrow Rock stopped at ten past three, and Ada Penhallow was the only keeper awake to hear the silence. Her father's pocket watch lay open on the logbook, its gears showing through the cracked glass, and she knew before she looked at the wall clock that both had given up together. Outside, the wind worked at the shutters like someone trying a stubborn lock.

The spare key hung on a nail behind the paraffin tins, tied with a length of grey wool, exactly where her father had left it. She climbed the iron stairs with the lantern knocking against her shin, counting the hundred and twelve steps the way he had taught her. At the top, the brass housing was warm to the touch, and the needle of the old compass bolted beside the lens had worked loose again. It spun lazily, pointing at nothing she could trust.
She had grown up believing the sea would always tell you where north was if you kept your hands steady. She found the seam where the gears met, fitted the key, and turned until her wrists ached. Somewhere below, the watch ticked once, then twice, as if remembering how.
At half past four the beam swept out over the water, pale and certain, and a trawler's lamp answered from the dark. Ada wrote in the log: lamp lit, 04:31, wind backing west. Beneath it, in smaller letters, she added the line her father always wrote on nights like this one: found my way.
