Neo-traditional perfume bottle tattoos in colour

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

This collage shows six photographs of neo-traditional tattoos of ornate perfume bottles, some with a shell, a scroll banner reading VICTORY, and wisps of coloured smoke. The bold outlines, decorative scrollwork and saturated fills in pink, purple, green, teal and orange are typical of the style. The tattoos sit on forearms, upper arms and calves, with each shown from a slightly different angle against a plain or softly blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Dorothy Pyle had the only scent counter left on Carrow Street that still sold something you could smell from the door, and on the night the wireless said the war was over she gave me the last bottle in her window. It was green glass, heavy as a flatiron, with gilt scrollwork climbing its shoulders like ivy up a garden wall. "Don't you dare open it on the bus," she said. "Open it on the floor of the Majestic."

The Majestic was a dance hall above a bootmaker's, and by eleven the sprung boards were rising and falling under four hundred pairs of shoes. I found Lil Harker by the cloakroom hatch, her hair pinned with a paper rosette, and we pushed through to the middle where the band had gone into a foxtrot nobody could resist. I thumbed the stopper loose and the scent came out in a pink-tinged puff, sweet as sugared plums, and it hung in the lamplight over the dancers like a second ceiling. Somebody whooped. Somebody else shouted VICTORY from the balcony, and the bandleader, who had been waiting all week for permission, put his whole weight into the brass.

Lil took my hand and pulled me into the turn. The smoke hung and drifted, and every couple we spun past left a little trail of it, rose and teal, a ribbon through the crowd. By the last chorus the floor smelled like a rich woman's bedroom and a bakery at once, and nobody cared whose husband was still missing.

When the lights came up Lil looked at the bottle in my hand, nearly empty, and laughed. "You spent the lot," she said. "Dot will have your hide." I didn't tell her I'd kept back one drop for the morning, dabbed on the cuff of my good blouse, so that for a whole week I'd carry that night about me, a floor full of people who had all lived through the same thing and were, for once, dancing.
