Dreamcatcher, moon and sunflower on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a blue crescent moon bearing a face sits on the upper arm, with a large yellow sunflower overlapping the web at the upper right. Three feathers hang below on cords, filled with pink, teal, yellow and orange patterns, with small beads along the lines. Bold dark outlines and saturated colour sit on the arm, and the design fills most of the upper arm.

Mind the lamp, it's been swinging since Thetford, and I'll not have it going over onto the coal. Sit there where the cushion is. Good. Now, you want the moon story, the one my mother told me on this same cabin roof, and you'll have it straight, with no skipping the bit about the sunflower.

The moon over the Ouse that year had a face on her, a sour little face, because she had been hung up there to keep watch and nobody ever thanked her. She looked down on the lock at Denver and saw the bargemen's daughters dreaming bad dreams: cold water, the bridge, fathers not coming home. So she sent for old Nan Hawthorne, who wove webs from willow and horsehair and knew how to catch things.

Nan bent a hoop of willow three times round her thumb and strung it with a web so fine you could only see it when the light went wrong. The bad dreams tangled in it like moths. But the web was too busy with nightmares to let the good ones through, so Nan hung three feathers from the cords, one for each girl, and the sweet dreams slid down them into the bunks by morning. Then a sunflower came up the towpath unasked, having followed the light all summer, and settled itself across the hoop, saying it had been a stalk too long and wanted something worth looking at.

That is why, when you lie awake on a barge and the moon has a face on her, you look up and tell her the truth about your day. She likes that. Now, the lamp, and then bed.
