Clouds and wave on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows dark storm clouds above a large curling wave, with a rocky outcrop and sea spray below. The shading is soft and smooth, with strong contrast between the deep black clouds and the lighter grey highlights on the water. It wraps over the shoulder and down the upper arm, with the wave filling the centre of the composition.

Tom, the glass dropped again last night, so I've given up pretending I can sleep. Dad is at the window with the kettle going cold behind him, watching the cloud bank stack up over Scarrow Head the way it did the winter we lost the Mary Ann. You'll remember it was a hard black ridge then, and the sea came up underneath it like something lifting its back.

Mrs Penhallow came up the lane this morning with a loaf under her arm and said the Gannet is still out past the skerries. I told her you'd have turned back by now. She didn't look at me. She asked whether you still carry Gran's brass compass, the one with the cracked glass, and when I said yes she nodded as if that settled something.

The wave I keep thinking of is the one from the Sunday you left, when it stood up off the rocks higher than the chapel roof and hung there, curling over with the spray torn off its lip like smoke. Everyone ran for the slipway except you. You stood on the bottom step and laughed at it, and I could have throttled you for it.

The Gannet came round the headland just after six, low in the water and riding the grey swell like a cork. Dad saw her first. He didn't say anything. He went to the hook by the stove, took down the kettle and filled it at the sink, and I knew it would be boiling before you were up the lane.
