Cluster of four roses in pencil

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows four open roses clustered in a loose arrangement, with one rose at the top, two at the middle left and right, and one larger rose at the bottom right. The petals are built up with fine, hatched pencil strokes and soft shading, giving depth and a realistic sense of form. The image is entirely black and grey on a plain white background, with the roses filling the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Hester, the roses came up the lane this morning in a wheelbarrow, four of them still in their pots, and the carter swore they were the last of the Vellan stock before the frost took the glasshouse. I have put the big one by the kitchen door where you always said the light was best, and the other three along the wall where the bees can find them. Mrs Odell from the mill came to inspect them with her spectacles on her nose and said they looked like they were arguing about something. I told her that was only the wind.

I found your pencil case in the drawer under the almanac, the one with the chewed end and the sharpener shaped like a hedgehog. I have been sketching them at the table in the evenings, the way you did when the post was late and there was nothing to do but wait for the kettle. My petals come out lumpy. Yours always had that curl at the edge, as if each leaf had just been told a secret and didn't mean to laugh. I keep trying to shade the shadow inside the top one, where it folds back on itself, and every time I go too dark and have to rub it out with bread.

The man who sold the bulbs asked after you on Tuesday. I said you had gone to see your sister at Carrow, which is true enough, and he nodded as if he had known all along. Perhaps he had. You never could keep a thing from the whole village for long.

The small rose at the top has opened properly now. I counted eleven layers of petal from the outside in, the same number as the shelf of jars you kept in the cellar. I will leave the window open tonight so you can tell me if I have got it wrong. Your loving sister-in-law, Ada.
