Four stacked roses with leaves
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows four open roses stacked one above another in a vertical column, each with layered petals and a tightly curled centre. Serrated leaves sit between and beside the blooms, all drawn with even, dark outlines and no shading. The subject is set against a plain white background with the design centred and filling most of the frame.

Mrs Hollis had grafted roses in the same potting shed behind Fenwick Lane for thirty-one years, and she did not hold with fancy names. Her stock was dog rose, rooted from hedgerow cuttings, and every spring she budded it with whatever her customers brought in a jam jar. That March it was a bloom from the churchyard wall, a dark red one nobody could name, and a single bud from the vicar's wife, who wanted something pink for her mother.

Her nephew Tomasz, home from the Harwich boats for the winter, watched her work with his hands in his pockets. "You're putting four on one stem," he said. "Nobody does that." She tied the first bud in with raffia, then the second above it, shoving each lowest eye up past the wound until the stem looked like a chimney stacked with flowers. "They'll fight for the sap," she said. "Let them. The strongest takes the top and the rest learn to wait."
By June the column had leafed out, serrated and sharp at the edges, and the four blooms opened one above another like a row of lamps. Tomasz came up the lane on his bicycle with the post and stopped at the gate, where the gravel was blown with petals. The pink one had come out first, as the vicar's wife had hoped, and the churchyard red had gone dark at its heart. Mrs Hollis was already cutting the raffia away, slow and careful, so nothing would tear.
"Bottom one's always last to open," she said, not looking up. "Takes the longest to get its colour."
