Coat hanger tattoo on the nape
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline of a coat hanger sits on the back of the neck, just below the hairline, with the hair pinned up in a bun above it. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the hanger is drawn in a simple single-line style. The black and white photograph is taken from behind in a kitchen, with a window and a cup on the counter in the background.

Nobody collected the grey wool coat from the rail at Halloran's, so on the third Friday Mrs Abney wrote a ticket for it anyway and pinned it to the lapel, the way her late husband had taught her. Every shop in Margate keeps a drawer of forgotten things. Hers held four gloves, a bus pass, and a letter addressed to a man who had died in 1987.

The hangers were the real trouble. Customers never left those behind. They walked off with them by the armful, and she spent her Sundays on the bus to the wholesaler in Ramsgate buying back what had gone. Her grandson Dev thought this was daft. The coat was worth nothing, he said, and the hanger worth less, and the owner had almost certainly moved to Spain.
On the Monday the bell over the door rang and a young woman came in holding a wire hanger, bent slightly out of true. She had found it folded into the lining of a jacket her mother bought at the Oxfam on the high street years ago. Would Mrs Abney know whose it was? Mrs Abney turned it over. Stamped on the hook, in worn capitals, was HALLORAN'S, and beneath it the year 1969, when her husband had opened the shop.
She straightened the hook with two fingers, lifted the grey coat from the rail, and hung it on the hanger the young woman had brought back. "Keep it," she said. "It was always going to be somebody's to carry." Dev, watching from the counter, reached for the drawer and then, for once, left it shut.
