Infinity symbol on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph taken from behind shows a person with dark hair tied up, revealing the back of the neck and upper shoulders. A small infinity symbol sits centrally on the nape, drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading. The image is monochrome, with a plain pale wall behind the subject, keeping the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Dear Ada,

The cable came up off the Azores grey with weed, and I have spent three days on my knees in the cable tank splicing it back together. Mr Pryce, the chief electrician, says a splice done right should outlive the copper around it. He made me practise a figure of eight on a spare length first, a single loop that crosses itself in the middle, over and under, until my fingers knew it without asking me. He called it the ribbon for the tank. I called it the lazy eight. He called it nothing at all and made me do it again.
Last night the line went dead at two hundred fathoms, and the whole deck stood in the wireroom listening to nothing. The needle sat on zero like a dog that had lost its master. I kept thinking about that loop on the bench, how you can run a thumb around it and never find the start or the finish. Mr Pryce said the sea does not care where the joint is, only that it holds. So I went down in the bell with a lamp and a bundle of wire, and found the break forty yards along, a crushed sheath where something big had taken a bite.
When the signal came back, the clerks cheered in the cabin like children, and I sat on the cold steel with my hands shaking and told nobody. I wanted to write to you first, because you always said I would never finish anything that didn't have a beginning. Well, this one has none. I checked.
Your brother, Tom
