Coiled snakes across the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Two patterned snakes coil over the torso, one wrapping diagonally from the upper right and the other curling in the lower left, with heads finished in detail. The linework is bold and the scales are shaded with soft grey gradients and solid black accents. The image is a sepia-toned close crop of bare skin, with the snakes filling most of the frame.

Sit closer, the fire only warms the ones who lean in. Not you, the boy with ink on his fingers, lean in. Two snakes came to the river port the winter the ford froze, shut in a basket of straw that stank of goat. The carter swore they were a matched pair from the delta, one striped like a sandbank at dusk, one speckled like a wet fig. He sold them to Amara the rope-maker for four silver rings and a cough he couldn't shake.

Amara kept them in the loft above her drying nets and fed them mice from the granary. But the loft was cold, and by midwinter the snakes had stopped eating. They knotted together in the rafters, one wound over the other like ribs on a hull, and no amount of coaxing would untie them. When Teodor the moneylender came up the stairs with his purse and his thin smile, he saw two beasts he could sell twice over, if only he could separate them.
He paid Amara in full and took the striped one away in a sack. The speckled one stayed behind, curled around a beam, and it would not uncoil for three days. On the fourth morning Teodor's cart was found at the ford with its lid tied fast and its mules standing patiently in the shallows. Nobody opened the sack. Nobody needed to. In spring, Amara climbed to the loft and found the striped one back among the nets, its tail looped twice around its partner's neck, both of them warm as bread.
So when someone offers you a single snake for a fair price, you ask where its other half is sleeping. Then you go home and keep your coin in your own pocket, and the river will carry them both down to the delta, where the reeds close over them like a door.
