Green viper snake on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A green viper coils around a branch and opens its mouth toward the viewer, with its head at the lower left of the design. The scales are shaded in detail with bright greens and darker tones, and the background foliage is rendered in muted browns and teals. The tattoo wraps across the upper arm and shoulder, filling most of the frame against a white tank top.

The road over the Kestrel Pass had been shut since the spring thaw, so when Ada Penrose reached the hut at Tallow Gap she found only a mule called Sorrel and a man who did not look up from his mending. He held up his left hand, which was dark with old punctures, and said he had not needed to.

That night she lay awake listening to the wind work at the shutters. Near midnight something moved along the rafters, a slow, deliberate sliding, and she lit the lamp to find a green viper coiled round the cross-beam, its head lifted and its mouth open, pink and wet, as though it had been waiting for someone to notice it. The scales caught the lamplight like wet leaves. Below it, in the corner, the mule stamped once and went quiet.
She did not scream. She had come up the pass to deliver a letter to her brother, and she had carried it in her coat for nine days, and she understood now that she had been carrying it for the snake too. In the morning she gave the letter to the mender, who read it, folded it, and laid it on the warm stone by the hearth where the viper had gone. Nothing came back up the mountain that year, and the hazels bloomed early on the far side of the Gap.
